I really enjoyed this story.
It was life on the dangerous high seas without SA or too much degradation.
It was distrusting everyone but relying on everyone all at once.
It was treasure hunting, betrayal and trading.
It had everything I never knew I wanted.

While I enjoyed this book, it really wasn’t what I was expecting.
Fable is a story about a girl abandoned by her essentially pirate father and made to figure out how to join a ship crew on her own.
I definitely thought there would be more pirates and swashbuckling. Or at least less descriptions of how to rig a ship and climb a mast and whatnot. Those scenes really bored me and it got to the point where I didn’t care about the major plot points because I don’t care about ships and trading.
What I did like about the book was the complex characters, the slow burn complicated romance, the found family trope, and the themes of grief woven intricately throughout.
So overall, I liked the book and probably will continue the series, but I didn’t love it and am not in a rush to read Namesake.

Sometimes it felt like I'd already read this book? Even though I've never touched it before? At least, for the first 100ish pages. I stuck with it because I liked it better than the books it reminded me of, and I'm happy to say it improved! I liked Fable's character and all the side characters, and I feel the relationships between them all were done well!

Very unfair cliffhanger, though. I'm definitely picking up the next book

I did enjoy the setting, plot, conflicts, and characters in this. Those elements really got me hooked to the book and made listening to it very enjoyable.

But, I hated the romance elements. Honestly I thought Fable and West had no chemistry at all. Like Fable has a huge crush on West throughout the book but I never bought her feelings for him and other than his looks didn't understand why she liked him so much. I also thought their interactions had basically zero chemistry and felt really forced. Fable had a lot more actual chemistry with Willa who would have been such a better love interest for her. Yet another book where the cishet romance is boring and falt and the possible queer romance that authors refuse to acknowledge would have been 10 times better and more interesting.

It wasn't a bad book and I will probably listen to the sequel one day. I'm not dying to read it but this was a solid short read that I did enjoy though!
