“There are parts of our hearts we give away. Not lend, but sacrifice entirely. And there are some people to whom we give these pieces, knowing we’ll never get them back.”

Coming of age

This was so heartbreakingly nostalgic. You know when you’re in your 20s and you think you’re in love but you continually put yourself in a box to fit a narrative for the person that wants you to conform because it’s not really love at all? That’s this book.

It captures coming of age so beautifully. My heart ached for Adelaide. I wanted to shake her and tell her to wake up on every other page. But also knew she needed this journey. You grow from those moments.

I can look back in hindsight and say “yup. Little baby unaware Delayna needed to read this!” But she wouldn’t have listened! You couldn’t tell her shit! Delayna now needed this as a reminder to herself how far she’s come!

The way it portrays mental illness is done so so well. It’s just there. Just how it should be. It’s not a focal point. It’s just part of Adelaide’s life and that’s that.

Overall: grab if you’ve been through heart ache, grief, putting yourself in a box to fit other’s expectations, being in love, finding yourself. All of it. This one’s for the girls that didn’t know any better but now they do and they’re strong as fuck because of it!

Favorite Character: Adelaide.  Sweet, sweet naive Adelaide 🫶🏼

SO MANY CRINGE REFERENCES. It’s 2023 and there are plenty of non-problematic references to use instead of Harry Potter and Call Me by Your Name.

There is a lot of graphic rape/sexual assault early on that did not sit well with me and the moment the book got graphic with parental death via car accident, I had to peace out.

Lots of my friends loved this, but it wasn’t for me!

Thanks to Libro.FM for the free ALC!
