"They were all seventeen and miserable, just like me. They didn't have time to wonder why I was a little more miserable than most."
It took a while for Girl, Interrupted to grow on me. I had issues with the beginning in particular and after reading the first 40 pages or so, I did not touch this book again for almost two weeks; I just couldn't convince myself to go back to it. However, once I continued reading it, I started to like it more and more and I found myself laughing, being frustrated or being sad along with the characters.
Kaysen's story about her time in the McLean Hospital is fascinating overall and I really felt for her and the situation she was in. There were times in this story when I just wanted to jump in this book, give her a hug and tell her it's going to be fine. I always appreciate books that manage to ignite strong feelings within me and it's often what makes the difference between a good and a great book for me. Girl, Interrupted definitely checks that box.
Now, while I did enjoy most of book, especially the second half, I kept in mind for the final rating that I did have issues with the beginning. There were also other chapters throughout the book that I found to be rather boring or information overload and I ended up just skimming through them. I was also expecting something different from the ending; while I'm not sure what exactly, I felt the need for something more.
Overall, I would recommend this book for a quick read and I believe it brings up some interesting topics. I think a lot of people would be able to relate to parts of Kaysen's story, some of her feelings or inner thoughts.
