Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure by Bill Willingham

This was pretty much Red Sonja running around having adventures in a steampunk world, and somewhere along the line, a group of superheroes (or, well, extraordinarily unnatural humans) got together in a crossover world to play with all sorts of technology. Oh, and there's a League of Supervillains too, and surprise, surprise, they're in it to TAKE OVER THE WORLD.

Really, it was an action-packed adventure, and I was entertained for the first few issues, up until the point Red Sonja came along and somehow not even the disintegrator guns could save the rest of the story from spiraling down to the same hack-and-slash sword and sorcery game that Sonja always plays.

The art is pretty. There are lots of female characters. But I was completely lost most of the time. I read some of the Dynamite comics when I was a kid, mostly The Phantom, and was aware of some of the other characters, and I think this is really clever, but I just didn't get most of it. Someone with a greater knowledge of the various characters would have better luck, I reckon. Me, I'm going back to Fables :)

A fun steampunk-take on some very familiar characters from comic books. It mostly centered on Red Sonja, who is one of my favorites, but it introduced me to other heroes I had heard of but never read. I will be picking up some of the other hero's books soon.

This book was mostly okay. It had some good moments, but nothing about it really wowed me. Things took a bit to get going and I felt like the characters didn't really get a great introduction until the end of the story. I liked the idea behind it, using these classic comics characters in a new way that meshes them together. There are other books out there set in the same world, but I don't think I will bother to check them out.

Really fun reimagining of some iconic characters. Witty dialogue. Vibrant pictures. For whatever the plot lacked, the banter made up for.

Once again, Dynamite comics has an interesting premise that gets squandered by the finale.

As usual, my biggest complaint lies within the artwork. There's no real dynamic or interesting character designs for such a radical steampunk alternate universe, they mostly seem to come from the first three google images when you search for "steampunk". I'm not kidding when I say that Red Sonja and Vampirella have the same face and body.

In all the times I've read something from Dynamite, they just about always seem to have the wrong art team on board to make the books. This is done in a style that would be more fitting for something like a dark crime story instead of a high steampunk fantasy. Even the variant covers seem to have a better grasp of what the art should look like instead of the interior artists.

On the brighter side, the writing actually pretty decent and well paced, until the last two issues of the book when it features a six month time skip and a disconnected story. The interesting supporting cast doesn't even come back until about the end of the final issue. Even the main villains of the book have little interaction with the protagonists, even though they're the archenemies of the featured protagonists in the story. And unfortunately, it ends in a cliffhanger because god forbid Dynamite try to leave a story with a satisfying conclusion instead of yet another franchise product.

This was really good and the artwork was fantastic. It was a solid 5 throughout, but the last two issues (there's only 7) felt really rushed, so I give it a 4.

Might do a video review of this one. Fun but not as solid as Fables, a few glaring errors even in the writing, and the story seemed to finish hurriedly halfway through. Is there more? I don't get it. Unfulfilled potential here if that's truly the end.
