A somewhat disappointing conclusion to a macabre set up - the language and descriptions were very close to the bone in what actually happens to women & the complicity of men - particularly those bonded in sport.

The Princess Game is a different kind of retelling, told in a series of case notes from the perspective of an undercover cop trying to solve the murders of five students at a local high school. Instead of the princes being the ones who are the series, they’re almost the villains, serving as the prime suspects during the case. I think since I had the audio narration accompanied with this e-book, it really brought the story to life with a sort of true crime feel to the book. I felt that Chainani had some interesting thematic elements in this that were executed well as well as strategically using suspense to keep readers guessing who the culprit is. If you’re in need of a thriller that combines fairytale retellings with true crime, you might enjoy The Princess Game.

Listen, I like this author. I enjoyed a School for Good and Evil... but like... this a collection... for adults. He wrote about twenty-something undercover cop pretending to be a high schooler having sex [Note: did not write the sex scenes, but boy howdy were the referenced!] with a freshly eighteen-year-old. With YA tones. I would not call this a YA book outside of the tone it was written.

This really wanted to be more interesting than it ended up being. The highest praise I can say in the favor of the story is that it had the best internal references to the most fairytale lore/characters/places of the entire collection. That said, for the most part, I was bored of this, and I predicted the murderer by about the last third. I was surprised a little on the note that ended on.

ummmm jock duchey boys(Princes from our fairytales) being investigated killing girls(the princesses)....Then it threw in so racisms portrayal attempts for certain princes. ehhh it was written by a man.... This is a dudes book in my opinion..
