The Princess Game is a different kind of retelling, told in a series of case notes from the perspective of an undercover cop trying to solve the murders of five students at a local high school. Instead of the princes being the ones who are the series, they’re almost the villains, serving as the prime suspects during the case. I think since I had the audio narration accompanied with this e-book, it really brought the story to life with a sort of true crime feel to the book. I felt that Chainani had some interesting thematic elements in this that were executed well as well as strategically using suspense to keep readers guessing who the culprit is. If you’re in need of a thriller that combines fairytale retellings with true crime, you might enjoy The Princess Game.

Listen, I like this author. I enjoyed a School for Good and Evil... but like... this a collection... for adults. He wrote about twenty-something undercover cop pretending to be a high schooler having sex [Note: did not write the sex scenes, but boy howdy were the referenced!] with a freshly eighteen-year-old. With YA tones. I would not call this a YA book outside of the tone it was written.

The premise was cool, but the tone this was written in just felt too juvenile to work.

This is a graphic, eerie, and dark story involving murder and misogyny. The audio book is full cast and engaging to listen to.

Interesting story written In script format. Interesting take on princes versus princesses in a modern high school setting. With a murderer killing princesses and two undercover cops trying to solve the murders.

Despite being in a collection of "fairy tales for the here and now" this story is not anything like a fairy tale. A better comparison would be the movie "Seven" except using princesses instead of the seven deadly sins. I thought the interview-style format of the text was an interesting way to tell this story, though it did mean that I have very little idea what any of the characters look like, sound like, etc. I have no sense of them as more than caricatures. It was also amusing (at first) that all of the "princes" have names out of Disney movies.

Not my kind of story, though fans of thrillers may enjoy it.
