This book simultaneously disgusted me and broke my heart. It didn’t take long for things to start happening and then it just kept coming. This book literally wormed its way into my head and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It also referenced Anne of Green Gables twice which is my favorite book, and I thought it was hilarious that THIS was the book it was referenced in. I loved the characters of the Scouts. Each boy was so unique and fascinating. I DID have to skip the part about
Shelley killing his mom’s cat. I can handle a lot of gore and all that, but cats and dogs I can’t handle. I also sobbed my eyes out at the part with the turtle.
if you like nasty books, consider this one.

not sure how to rate this. imo it was a good book but i wouldn’t re-read it or recommend it to anyone, because aside from the fact that i did think it was well-written with a decent story and set of characters it didn’t provide me with anything special or any sense of fulfilment. moreover this book was very heavy on the animal cruelty and some of the sequences were so jarring that had to skip over it because it became very upsetting, and i don’t think this level of detail in the descriptions was necessary aside from providing shock value. ultimately, i did not think that this book was scary or frightening, just sad, disgusting and tragic.

So. I think the best word for this book is "yucky". Between graphic body horror, grotesqu situations and disturbing inner monologs, this book had me questioning whether I could keep reading as I frantically flew through It's pages.

Every single character in this book is beautifully written, even if it is horrific. Each character comes with their own unique backstory that pulls you in, whether out of pity or pure disgust. Loved it.

I saw a lot of reviews about animal abuse that made me weary going in and I have to agree - it's detailed. It's awful. It's not for the faint of heart.

A final note - bugs. Lots and lots of bugs. If that is a no go for you, don't bother with this one.

A shocking journey. Satisfying as it is horrifying. A vast study of human nature and experience, social and primal. Probably #1 fave book right now.

This book is an absolute fucking nightmare, I mean this in the best way possible.
Not for even the remotely faint of heart, I usually have a strong stomach for media like this but event I had to avoid the book for a couple of days when my real life got stressful.

I didn't not like this book, and the writing wasn't bad. That said, I wished the author had gone a little harder. This is sort of a modern-day retelling of Lord of the Flies, but one of the characters is a literal sociopath. I wanted to see the boys dealing with the situation, but instead, they had the unnecessary extra obstacle of another boy. This extra obstacle detracted from the story, in my opinion. I also don't feel like the story said anything new about the theme.
