The first thing I want to say is: this is the book you need to make it to. The first book has a lot of world building and teases the idea of romance. Really it's Laurent being an evil brat. This is the book that develops Laurent and Damen's dynamic and gives us tension. We see Laurent slowly become more human through Damen's POV. Not gonna lie, it had me giggling and kicking my feet.

Ooh!!! Things are happening!! This is one of those political fantasy books where you don’t see any of the political machinations until the very last second. And it’s fantastic!! I love the way Laurent’s mind works and all the little things that he’s doing in secret that have huge repercussions later. I also loved that Damen is slowly coming to realize that there is so much more going on under the surface, both with Laurent and the political landscape that he never knew was there. There is just so much going on and what you think is happening might actually be something else completely. It’s such a fun ride, and the ending??? Didn’t see that coming, but I probably should have. Anyway, Prince’s Gambit is getting five stars!

Like the first book in the series this one ends on a cliffhanger. Unlike the first book this one has a decent stopping point and an actual arc. I actually liked this one better than the first. While the first book focused in on the slave element and abuse, this book focused on preparing for a military campaign. There's plenty of politics and scheming as well as high stakes covert missions and large scale battles. And yes, the slowest of slow burn enemies to lovers trope.
