Spoiler3.0 Read it in a day, not because it wowed me but because it was both short and easy. Not exactly sure what I just read. Might be prose / love story to books. Can any bona fide bibliophiles weigh in please? From a “literary fiction” standpoint, i would have liked richer character development. I did not connect with the motivations of most characters. Starting with Amy and AJ falling in love. Maya was unbelievably (literally) precocious and I felt little toward her, which is sad. I did not cry in this book (yet Gabrielle Zevin ripped me apart in Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, so I know she has it in her). Maybe the book would be better is Zevin allowed it to be twice as long. The so-called plot “twists” were hardly compelling. Some parts took me straight out of it, like using the term “miscarriage” for pregnancy loss after 6mo (for a charter who endured a devastating # of losses) and also when AJ remarked narrated that there are “zillions of people in the world” when reflecting on why he doesn’t believe in The One. For such a persnickety guy, I don’t understand why he’s use hyperbole on an otherwise understood number.

I’m not really sure how this book is so beloved?? I am thoroughly disappointed because I really enjoyed tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. But this book was so flat with no likable characters, no plot, and a thousand cliches. I enjoyed that the setting was primarily a bookstore? The prose was sometimes good? Otherwise, a pretty complete waste of time.

This book deserves a long, thorough, detailed review. Readers need to know that the well developed, human, likable characters will so easily become a part of their lives. They need to understand that there are terrible coincidences in the beginning that make sense in the middle and the end. They need to fall in love with AJ and his family. They need to appreciate it and love it and work earnestly to ensure that Gabrielle Zevin receives every ounce of credit she deserves for this book. Did I mention it's absolutely a new favorite?

I really enjoyed this book and for being such a short read I really did like the characters. I didn't get a five star feeling for this book but objectively the writing is amazing (I love Gabrielle Zevin) and this is such a nice feel-good book. I almost do wish this was longer but at the same time for how short this book is I did feel like these characters were fully fleshed out and I did come to care about them. I think this is a great fall book full of cozy, bookish vibes and would work great as a palate cleanser in between more high risk books.
