Well I loved this quirky book but that is because my dad is exactly like the guy in the story - committed to outwit the squirrels that steal the birdseed in the feeders. Lobed thinking of the squirrels as the cunning little engineers they are! Very Fu. Fall read.

Old Man Fookwire had it out for the squirrels. They raided his bird feeders and scared away the birds he loved to paint - his only true passion. He plotted his revenge, but ended up getting a big surprise instead.
I think that my love of this book is due wholly to my grandfather who also hates squirrels. My grandpa tried lots of different things to keep squirrels out of his bird feeders. He greased the pole and put a slinky on it. I'm sure there were other things up his sleeve, but I can't remember them now. Fookwire is the perfect old man, curmudgeonly but also lovable. Daniel Salmieri's illustrations are PERFECT for Rubin's text. I didn't know until today that I needed this book. I love it.

***All questions answered by my 4 year old***
Do you like this book?
Yeah! Because the darn squirrels were darn! And the old man got happy because they turned into birds!
What's your favorite part of the book?
Momma reads it. And it's so funny. I was laughing when the old man said he didn't like puppies. Because I like puppies! It made me feel silly!
What do you think of the cover?
I like it because of the squirrels. I want squirrels in the house.
Do you want me to read it again?
Yeah!
What Momma Thinks...
This is a really silly book. Finn was giggling the entire time and kept yelling out "Darn squirrels!" He said he really likes puppies and squirrels, but not the birds. The art is kind of funny looking, but I guess it fits the book.

As I mentioned in Fly South , the sequel to Those Darn Squirrels! , the language is a little large for the younger kids (easily overlooked: read- parents can explain or the kids will be busy caught up in squirrel antics). That being said, this book is hilarious! It tells a great story, inspires creativity, and has fun! And as a Mainer, "Darn squirrels!" definitely resonates for me!

We laughed out loud a lot, reading this, and had a great time running around with our fists shaking and yelling about squirrels! Great fun!
