I just didn't find it funny (it's supposed to be funny?) nor did I find any of the characters likeable.

Flora, a twenty something young woman, is orphaned and left with only a hundred pounds a year. She determines to move in with relatives and chooses the cousins at Cold Comfort Farm. They live a dismal existence. Flora sets out to improve their lives.

This little book is quite amusing.

A tongue in cheek comedy about an orphaned woman who goes to a distant relatives farm to live and starts meddling in their lives.

A little dated in places (racism, sexism, fat phobia and rape) unfortunately, however only minimally.

This one started funny, descended through some homophobic jokes and wound up annoyingly twee!

I'm a bit reluctant to recommend this book as I'm realising the humour is of a very specific sort that won't appeal to everybody but it certainly appealed to me. Such a delight, hilariously funny, scathingly accurate in parodying all the rural nonsense and yet so uplifting and happy. Flora Poste is one of the most refreshing role models for girls who get shit done and I thoroughly enjoyed the book start to finish.
