Hands down the most disturbing book I’ve ever read. Couldn’t finish it. Please read the warnings before giving it a read.

I did not get this book at all..
Maybe I'm culturally illiterate.
I did not understand the point of this book at all.
The biggest compliment I can give is that the main character had a unique voice.
I just found this book to be gross and disgusting and pointless and peculiar. There were so many descriptions which were unnecessarily disgusting.

Maybe the translation wasn't good.

Although the book is less than 300 pages, it was such a drag. It took long for me to finish.

I don't know if it's a bad book. I think I just didn't understand it.

Compelling, but very grim.

A new all time favorite! 🔥
Such a gripping book that was written so beautifully. Tackles grief and loneliness from the eyes of a 12 year old child. Characters felt so raw and real. Atmospheric and well paced. Also the most disturbing book I have read in my entire life. Very graphic on themes about self harm, incest, pedophilia, suicide, sadistic acts, animal torture, and a lot of gross mannerisms by the characters (eating booger to make unsalted meal salty as an example). Oohh, also be warned of human body fluids. Though as much as these disturbing themes, they made sense to the story and felt natural. These disturbing themes were not placed in the book just for the sake of it. They have a function and helped the process of plot and character developments more gripping and exquisite.

This book is not for everyone. It is very polarizing and has a lot of triggers. I am so glad this one worked for me though.

The Discomfort of Evening by Marieke Lucas Rijneveld is the most uncomfortable book I have read in my entire life. Yet will also be the most memorable book that showcase perfectly the theme grief in the eyes of a minor. Plus the ending... dramatic 👌.
