It took me longer than usual to get into this, and I actually put it down for a few weeks and had to start over again. But I stuck with it because Kate Morton has never let me down. The writing is great and such an unusual story and satisfying ending. I'm still carrying around a warm feeling even though I finished this several days ago. Is there such a thing as a romantic mystery genre? If so, Kate Morton owns it.
There are a lot of characters, so I am glad I read this on the Kindle, where all you have to do is touch a character's name to get reminders of where you saw them earlier. So helpful for us senior readers! :-)

I fell completely inside this wonderful, long saga of the Edevane family and the London detective who solved their family mystery. Sadie Sparrow was asked to take a leave of absence from the force when it was suspected she had crossed the professional line and gone to the press over a case. She got too close and felt her department was leaving a case unsolved. This doggedness will serve her well while staying with her grandfather in Cornwell, she literally stumbles upon the remains of an abandoned mansion. Everything was left exactly as it was in the days following a midsummer's party and the disappearance of toddler Theo Edevane. It has now been 70 years, and the only two relatives remaining are Deborah, a politician's wife, and Alice, a mystery writer. With time on her hands and a passion to solve the unsolvable, Sadie sets out to determine what happened that night. Both Deborah and Alice believe they are each responsible for Theo's disappearance, but there are secrets not shared even between sisters. An excellent read!

Another one probably closer to 3.5. Took forever for me to get into, but I blame my own head more than the book itself - once I did, I enjoyed it - and twice I thought I had things figured out and was totally wrong. I do think the ending was a little too neat and left me going "really???" But a good read and I would definitely try another book from this author.

I always enjoy a Kate Morton novel because she so skillfully allows the reader to slip into an entirely new world - both in the present and in the past. While I felt she did the same in The Lake House, I was a bit disappointed because I figured out each twist before I read it. I also thought one of the biggest mysteries in the book was wrapped up just a little too neatly - almost unbelievably. Overall, though, it was an enjoyable read.

I love how she gives you just enough of a taste of a clue to keep you hooked. I hated to put this down, and even more to finish it. Absolutely delightful.

I really, really wanted to like this novel, but I just can't. I tried, but this is a big fat DNF for me.

One of my favorite authors! I listened to this one on Audible and I must confess, though wonderfully narrated in a British accent, it was difficult to follow in the first chapters because of the time flips. After "re-reading" a bit I finally got into the swing of it and was totally absorbed in an intricate mystery. The prose is so lovely in itself. Love love love this book.

I really enjoyed the different mysteries throughout this novel, and Kate Morton's descriptive writing is beautiful. I feel the book dragged in several places, but I couldn't put it down for the last third of the book. However, I had difficulty suspending my belief in several places, and the ending was too tidy for my liking.
