I thought this was an interesting little story that was damn addicting, even though it read like a drunken man's memoir. It moved at a quick pace, and was almost 100% character driven. While the world had some interesting tidbits, it was almost only for the characters development. I thought it could have been a little more organized, but then the story wouldn't have had the same effect.

Some of the stuff about memory and the twists were interesting, but the whole book is just some white dude failing upwards.

If there is one thing you can be sure of when it comes to a KJ Parker novella, it's that it will stab you in the gut and twist the knife. They probably lose their effectiveness after a while but I don't think I have read enough of them yet. This one is built on a particularly strong conceit that allows for a perfectly logical and fair presentation of last-minute twists.
