I read this for homeschooling because I'm doing a unit on shore birds. I was surprised she died and the meningitis came so quickly. but I thought it was a good book.

The writing is simple but somehow, the author still managed to weave a touching story that is at once, very sad but also joyous.

I wanted to like this book, as I have a lot of students that are really into birds and I'd hoped it would be a great book to recommend to them. Unfortunately it was so poorly written that I can't give it more than one star. (Maybe 1.5 if GoodReads allowed half-stars.) No clues were given to indicate that several days, weeks, or even months had passed. A lovely character was introduced in the beginning of the book only to have her killed off a few chapters in, and while I understand that such tragedies are sometimes necessary to drive a plot forward, this character could have been entirely eliminated without changing the core of the story. Characters made absolutist statements without any logical justification for their extreme determinism. And SO many events were packed into the plot! This story could have focused on one or two of the major plot themes, explored them in detail, developed the characters and their relationships and driving motives...but instead it reads like one long run-on sentence. (And yes, I realize that in all my griping, this is a very poorly written review with lots of run-on sentences of my own.)

Amazing when I picked up this book I thought it would be boring but now I can't put it down. I was so sad when Iona died. I feel a connection to these characters.

Not the most masterful prose, but the story is excellent and I can't wait to teach it.

This is the kind of book that reminds me why I love middle grade books. Beautiful story, sweet characters.
