This was highly recommended as a book to better understand medical intern-year/residency and while the sexual content was definitely very crude and off-putting, if you ignore those parts, the rest was helpful in understanding the mindsets and impacts of the stress and situations on the primary character and his co-interns. A fictionalized autobiography, it was a bit hard to get through because of the blatant objectification of women, but otherwise quite insightful and helpful for understanding the medical world.

opening line quote: "Life's like a penis; When it's soft you can't beat it; When it's hard you get screwed"

A high 3 stars. I think the style of writing sometimes deviated from what I appreciate in writing. The commentary was quite relevant and an interesting read overall. The satire and naming is unreal good, but I don't think I could get past the writing style - just personal preference. (part of the reason it took me so long to read) It's extremely honest and takes a hard look at the life of medical residency. Definitely a good book to have read, but I wanted to like it more than I did.

Read for book club.

Highly readable and absorbing.  Also I mostly hated it. Lots of bizarre sex and sexualisation, crossed with misery and bodily functions.

I’ll be interested to see how the doctors of book club feel it connects to reality.

Minor bonus points for the unexpected ending. And for the levels of humanity in characters along the way - I truly liked the policemen’s appearances.

Depressing af. Makes you scared to go to the doctor or go to a hospital.

I just found the perspective in this book so uncomfortable and as a chronically ill person would not recommend to friends.
