I love a great short story, I admire the way short story writers can introduce characters, develop a story, and resolve the conflict in a small amount of time. It's a special talent.

Alice Munro certainly has the talent. The first two stories of the compilation were riveting. Unfortunately only one or two other stories in the book were even mildly interesting to me. The majority of the stories just didn't grab my interest. They may have been well written, but they were just dull.

When I started reading this book I had no idea it is a collection of short stories. I initially thought it must be one of those books structured in a way whereby the author introduces new characters each chapter and then they are somehow wonderfully intertwined. I have to say I was relieved when I realised that is was not. I feel like that is a really common way to structure books these days and has become somewhat tiresome.

Each of these short stories comes off so raw and clearly articulated. They are all poignant in some way. I felt that Munro successfully caught the essence of each and reading it was kind of akin to recalling a distant memory. She crafted each one meticulously and I feel summed up the disorderly mess that sometimes can be beautiful and at other times can be life.

Sold, well-crafted, with evocative mood and tone, but not a single story moved me with an eagerness to turn the page.

Fine, but I had high expectations of someone who has won a Nobel Prize for her body of work, and I don't see anything from this collection sticking with me for long. There are a handful of tales here that genuinely interested me from beginning to end and several went in a completely different direction than expected, but for the most part the stories merely exist. I don't expect everything that I read to reach out and throttle me, but I do hope to at least have some sort of emotional response to the material. It is nice that the final four stories are autobiographical in nature and provide a glimpse of Munro's upbringing, but these have an odd tone and most don't seem to have much of a point. Munro is a gifted, elegant writer who packs a lot into each story, but overall I wanted more from this collection.

I'm sure this is blasphemy in some circles, but I just don't get the appeal.
