I restarted the anime before reading this, and I’m glad I did because as much as I loved this show growing up I enjoyed this manga volume much more.

Somehow this is just more fun. The major beats and characters are essentially the same (queerness aside) but it’s just the odd thing like Sakura not being the one to release all the cards that make this a bit more carefree. (Well, except for Sakura’s model mother marrying her 25 year old dad at 16…that was a weird detail. And the mother’s cousin being in love with her as well…)

Maybe it’s just that it’s a quicker story, throwing you right into the action from the start, and having very little filler going on. Either way, I’m excited to continue and see what else has is different from the anime!

If you’re wanting to pick the manga up, I’d recommend the collectors edition. The large format shows off the card really well even if there are some scaling issues and the action scenes are much easier to visually follow.
