With a very vague but exciting blurb, this book created questions and I wanted answers. After reading a few of Steve Cavanagh’s, Eddie Flynn books I was excited to get started on one of his standalone novels. After a very slow start, I wasn’t into it, the plot seemed thin and the writing dragged, and if I wasn’t familiar with the author's work I might have put this book down, Thankfully I didn’t.

Picking up tremendously for the middle portion of the book, with the story keeping you on your toes and never knowing what was going to happen next. With a plotline that wasn’t unheard of, Steve does a great job of adding little twists and turns to make this have individualism and stand out from similar scenarios from other books.

The ending however didn’t maintain the same heights as the middle, although not bad and still very enjoyable, I can’t help but feel there could have been more done with it, given the outlandish themes throughout.

The character work was good, nothing overly special but I felt everyone fit well and had a purpose with no spare parts just the flesh out the pages. Written well, a little slow in places, however, this could be to really ramp up the suspense when the twist start and the writing hits top speed.

Overall, this was a fun book that after the first 100 pages flew by. Story-wise I liked this book, but think it could have had a little extra just to gain the final jaw-dropping moment and the 5-star review.

Generally a good book but had higher expectations after reading the Eddie Flynn books. Lots of twists and turns in the book but was left a bit unsatisfied and with questions still left unanswered.

  • Tropes/themes:
    • Multiple POVs
    • Book within a book
    • Serial killer
    • Affairs
    • Kidnapping
    • Partial police procedural/legal thriller
    • Borderline metafiction
  • Super intriguing and unique concept
  • Extremely twisty
  • Packed with action
  • Liked the Eddie Flynn name drop too
  • The two main twists, earlier on in the story had my jaw ON THE FLOOR, and I was fully prepared to make this a five star read but then the last half was pretty predictable and no other twists shocked me. Don’t get me wrong, I still loved it, it just stopped it from being a full 5 star book. The very final twist was also interesting but it just didn’t pack a hard punch like those early on twists did for me. Regardless, would still 1000% recommend this and I wish I could read it again for the first time
