One of those books that gets 5 stars because I think everybody should read it. Oh boy, man oh man did this book hit me right in the feels. It was witty and touching and mature all at the same time. I am currently figuring out how to be a gay person in this world while so much hate simultaneously exists, and this book definitely gave me some perspective. For one, wow it really was so much harder to be gay in 2003. Two, it is definitely possible to be happy while so much homophobia still exists. If Jason and Kyle and Nelson can do it, so can I. The only downside of this book is there is a lot of physical abuse and violence, bullying, and derogatory name calling. Those are very potential trigger warnings. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this book to anybody, but especially queer people who are trying to figure out where there is room for them to be who they are in this world.

When I first read this book in middle school it was so mind blowingly amazing and I just couldn’t put it down. After reading it again now, I couldn’t it enjoy it and look over a lot of the slurs used and the stereotypes.

This book was a little cheesily written for my tastes, but I gave it three stars because it truly is an important book for young adults because it deals with many different aspects of being a homosexual teen, without being too sensationalistic or "adult" in its approach.

Slow predictable and bad narration
This Audio Books narration is terrible slow made worse by a slow cheesy predictable and Whiny plot.

It’s not a really good book and tries to put all the moral niceties together without making a real story. Just high school drivel romance.

Having previously read "So Much to Say" by Alex Sanchez, I was looking forward to another of his books. This one was too much, and unsatisfying.
It seems as if the author started brainstorming a list of all the types of people a gay teen might come across in his life, then decided to throw them all into the book rather than only choosing some.
Two-dimensional bully? Check. Dad in denial who pushes his son towards football and hockey? Check. PFLAG mom you can "talk to about anything"? Check. Angry, alcoholic, Latino father? Supportive two-dimensional lesbian friend? Mom who cries because you'll never have children and be happy? Principal who looks the other way? Check, check, check, and check. I could go on, but I'm sure you see the point. His plot points have a similar problem. If you are going to only read one gay teen novel, and want to learn about all of the trials and tribulations they may go through (start a school club! get beat up! have unprotected sex-oops!) then this should cover it all. There are many other books out there that are better written and not so heavy handed with the stereotypes and after-school-special messages. "So Much to Say", for example.

This was the first "Gay" book I read. I remember checking it out in High School and hiding it from my parents. I was 15 at the time. I fell hard for this book. I saw a little bit of myself in each character. I became an Alex Sanchez fan instantly and have read all his books. He's having writer's block now. Hopefully he goes into writing again. There's no one quite like him when it comes to LGBTQ books in my opinion. I'm almost 30 and would still read anything he puts out.
