3 1/2 stars. This is a winter world post apocalyptic fantasy with an unusual cast of otherworld beings. It was a bit slow, particularly the first half, but improved in the second. I was looking for urban fantasy rather than post apocalyptic, so I'm not sure if I'll continue the series, but it was a pretty decent read.

I do love Faith Hunter and have had this and it's follow-on, SERAPHS, on Mt Git'r'Read for some time. Not sure why though. I bought them both at the same time intending to immediately dive in. And then didn't. always at the top of the stack on the top shelf, but I never felt completely in the mood to start reading.
Until the other day....
And now I want to go home and the get the second one and plunge in ASAP.
A fine fantasy mixture of post-apocalypse, angels and magic, the story moves pretty fast. I really admire the main character, Thorn. She is a mage in hiding. She left the safety of the Enclave where mages are revered and kept, but something happened to Thorn and she had to leave. She's found serenity in a small mountain town, but she has to keep her magic hidden. The rest of the world fears, even reviles, mages. They revere the angels.
It's an interesting look at what can take place at any time and any place.
Action and magic and angels....really cannot wait to see what happens next.
Definite recommend.

Neo-mages, half-breeds (???), kylens, and demons, oh my. Seraphs that never call themselves Angels - oh except for that one who does. Oops. Are they secretly aliens? (No, really, someone speculates about that in the book...) Ice-age and ice caps but also Sun-days and sunbathing. The worst spell caster ever. (The chicken spell would have made me throw the book if I hadn't been reading on my phone.) How the heck has this woman survived up to the point where the reader meets her? She seems incapable of functioning in this world without immediately giving herself away.
Working phones but not cars or computers or...wait, some cars. But trips still have to be made by mule trains. I could have dealt with all this nonsense and still not wanted to smack Thorn with that amethyst if it hadn't been for the whole "Mage heat" idea. So so stupid. Please stop that. Now.

Just not for me. If the book had been set before and after the First plague that is more my style.

That ending though.. eh

So I loved this dark post apocalyptic world. I could definitely see a similar tone to the Jane Yellowrock series. And I dunno.. that finale? We went from low tech, learning how to control abilities and being a serious and responsible woman- to a ship (spaceship?). I may read the next book, but honestly I have no enthusiasm at that idea. 98% five stars

I really liked Thorn. She is a mage in hiding, pretending and living among humans. I am not normally fond of too much sex because it usually takes away from the book, but poor Thorn is deprived! What's worse is she runs into a Kylen and at the sight of him goes into heat. I am pretty sure I have seen women like this! All of the characters are interesting, and easy to like.

Started out interesting, dragged for a bit then confused the hell out of me. But I did keep reading because I wanted to see how it turned out. It got interesting again at the end but I don't think I'll continue with the series. I'll probably try another series by the author before adding her to my skip list.
