The author tells the story of her husband discovering he has Alzheimer’s and deciding he wants to die before he becomes too impaired. They found a clinic in Switzerland that could help. She recounts the process and her relationship with him. Sad – the love shines through, but so does the helplessness/hopelessness.

I loved this book. It’s about assisted/accompanied suicide and Alzheimer’s, but really it’s a love story. It gives you a vibrant understanding of the author’s relationship with her husband that is much more complex and vivid than most love stories I’ve read. Of course it’s also unbelievably sad, but also fascinating to learn about their experience. I’m so glad they were able to choose what was best for their family. Ultimately her description of her husband’s death was comforting. It’s a death that most of us don’t even think is really possible.

This book provides a different perspective on things assisted suicide and helping take care of a loved one who wants to go through with this. It was a very sad story with lots of love and great story telling associated with it. I gave it a 3.6 in my reviews because of the slow pace in nature and the lack of connections to them as people I think because of how much older they are. Overall I did think that this was a lovely story about two people who should have spent more time together but had to spend a difficult journey together.
