At first, I had a blast but as the story continued, the main character lacked agency. Something happens, she reacts, (is too honest and gets put to trial with no real consequences), time passes. This happened multiple times and really annoyed me. I put this book down for multiple weeks at a time because it bored me so much.

i don’t have any complaints abt this honestly, nor do i think this is the most astonishing novel ever known to mankind, i just think its kinda good, that’s it. its kind of like percy jackson except instead of it being about greek mythology its about elves. one thing i really liked was that the world building was not super complex and heavily complicated, unlike other fantasy books that make you want to just fling you and the book out the nearest window, because this is a book meant for middle schoolers it’s very simple to understand everything about the elves and where they live, etc etc. also liked that as the story progresses more and more information is slowly revealed, making the reader want to continue on so they can figure out wtf is going on. this is just in general a cute little fantasy book that i think kids and adults alike can thoroughly enjoy. definitely going to read the rest of the books in this series.

As far as a middle school fiction goes, this was really good!! It was relatable, and it was a good book for just kicking back and relaxing. It was very funny, especially when Keefe comes in. I love how diverse the characters are personality-wise, and how accurately Messenger can grow the characters throughout the series. She's very good at waiting until the last possible second to reveal a big twist, and then leave us on a cliffhanger. Stellarlune's is the worst as of yet. Overall a really great read, as is the rest of the series!

If you like Harry Potter, you will like this story...

At first, I thought the book was slow and pretty boring. I was initially going to give this book a 2 star, but then towards the ending it got interesting! (Which, side note, I am convinced that books in a series do this as a marketing gig for you to buy the second book) This, as you noticed, was enough to give it another star
While the plotline of the story was interesting, this story did a good job in world building and character writing. All of the characters were unique which I adore! (Even if I wanted to strangle some of the characters) and the world building was similar to Percy Jackson in a way, where there is this separate area away from ordinary humans.
Speaking of, it has a magical school which makes the book similar to Harry Potter, especially since one of the teachers was suspiciously like Professor Snape.

However, I just found the beginning of the book too slow, and I always was checking when the chapter would end. Which is never usually s good sign for me, but that changed TOWARDS THE END OF THE DARN BOOK

Would I recommend it? Maybe, maybe not. Would I read it again? Not in like...20 years but I don't think it wasted my time all that much.

I totally loved this book! Sophie is such a loveable character, and I found her thoughts and emotions in some points relatable. Plus, her having a stuffed animal is just adorable! The short chapters and fast pace made it a quick read. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a  low fantasy tale filled with action and mystery. This book is a must-read for sure!
