It was lovely to hear Kiyoko narrating her own novel. Having other voice actors and certain sounds within the audiobook was an interesting choice but also ended up taking me out of the story. I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the scenes too.
I also haaaated Sonya’s character, which made Coley’s feelings for her hard to understand, and I’m annoyed that they end up together (though I do appreciate the nod to the Girls Like Girls music video).

This book was absolutely amazing. I fell in love with Coley and Sonya, experiencing the roller coaster that was them from the start. This book however is not only about the beautiful young love that these two have. girls like girls deal with the reality of being queer in a heterosexual world and figuring that out as a young person. Kiyoko fully fleshed out Coley’s being and her trauma. The story is more about the growth and strength in pain and adversity. This book shows healing and peace after long term hurt is possible. I love this book. I give Girls Like Girls by Hayley Kiyoko 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The first few chapters made me roll my eyes. I do feel like the writing adds the distaste to the MC that we should have. I liked the way the relationship between the MC and the love interest was written. It was a good representation of what a WLW situationship feels like, I believe.

I thought this was really a sweet story about initial love and finding out who you are but I really disliked the characters in the story, particularly Sonya and Trenton. I don’t like the way that love is portrayed in some ways, particularly as something that always has elements of harm or hurt. That’s an unhealthy way to describe love, especially to the target audience of this novel which are upper middle/high school aged kids. I didn’t love the ending, because it felt like a cop out. The characters hadn’t changed all that much and they weren’t ready to make the choices they had made — it all felt too sped up. But, Coley and her dad building a relationship out of really negative circumstances was a beautiful plot line.

after years of watching girls like girls on youtube, ive finally found this book and i was radiant. as i read it, it disappointed me: the whole miscommunication trope was bad, the characters couldve had more development and the ending was rushed.
started as a book i thought i would keep with me forever, similar to the music video, but it really fell short.
