~On today's episode of "What The Fuck Did I Just Read?" We have Girls Like Girls, by the one and only ✨lesbian Jesus✨. I'm not gonna lie, I was really nervous about this one. It had a LOT of expectations to live up to.~ Let's dive in:

Poor Humorous Summary: Coley, gay and sad. Sonya, gay and sad but dances. ✨Gay gay gay gay gay.✨

- Anyway, pros and cons! -

~Pros~
• it delivered a very relatable young queer experience
• doesn't just touch on romance, it touches on some other real life shit that people deal with every day
• regardless of who you are, I think this book has something you can probably relate to
• the vibes/aesthetic I got from this book was amazing
• the little illustrations in the chapters were really cute!
• I appreciate the fact that Coley didn't become a damsel in distress over Sonya and found her self worth (towards the end, ofc)
• having the story built upon the music video was BRILLIANT. I love. If you grew up with the video, this book will feel nostalgic to you.

~Cons~
• I feel like the writing was a bit cringe at some points. (Ex: Olive Juice. Ah-Live-Juice)
• there are a lot of loose ends
• the trenton trope. i don't know the specific name for the trope of his character but I hate him.
• I understand Sonya went through a lot, but I still lowkey really don't like her. (I think many others probably won't either)
• Excessive underage drinking/drug use
• Many TWs (if that's not your cup of tea)
• I definitely feel like the book could have been at least a couple chapters longer

Regardless of my opinions on this book, Hayley Kiyoko did a fantastic job capturing the queer experience and bringing her iconic music video to life through literature!

(P.S. : TWs- Suicide, homophobia, drug/alcohol use)

Happy publication week to this book, & happy pride month! Girls Like Girls felt like a fitting start to June. I was so excited to read because I’m a fan of Hayley Kiyoko’s music.

SPOILERS AHEAD

While there was a lot that I liked about this book — namely 2006 as a setting, with public and private live journal posts giving us a peek into a a character’s head, and Coley’s amazing coworkers — this one wasn’t a perfect fit for me. There were a *lot* of subplots and characters that I felt didn’t get the time on the page that they needed, and the ending felt very rushed, particularly after that intense moment of violence.

Also, most of the characters, including the main character, are very terrible to one another and speak with cruelty at times, and I found that tough to read. I know that they’re all going through some tough stuff, but a lot of the dialogue and behavior felt like too much.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book!

I can't say that this was the best written book I've ever read. But fuck, it was still great. This book brought me to tears in ways that a book hasn't in quite some time. A great representation of what it's like to be queer in a small town, to have your whole life thrown into chaos, to resent someone despite loving them with all your heart. The story of Coley and Sonya is a heartachingly beautiful one, which I think many sapphic readers will find relatable. But it isn't just them. It's the story of Coley and Curtis, their growth as a family. It's Coley.
The GLG music video and song have meant so much to me since they came out (hehe) and now this book does too. Thank you, Hayley Kiyoko. Thank you for all you continue to do. Thank you for being loud about who you are. From one sapphic wasian from SoCal to another, thank you. You drag out these feelings in the deepest parts of myself and remind me that it's okay to feel every bit of it. Thank you.
