I snagged an ARC of this because I loved the cover and the premise. I'm big into Victorian-era stuff, although I haven't delved too much into the Steampunk genre yet. Overall, this was a fun read. The world-building was great, and the plot ended up being quite a bit different than I expected.
Where Pearson excels, though, is her character relationships. We didn't just have the main character and her love interest, and maybe a friend on the side. We had friendships between Victoria and Graham, Victoria and Rosalind, Victoria and Oscar, Oscar and Graham (whose friendship might have been my fave in the book), and more. They really did work as a group, and we don't see that often.
There was a period around 3/4 of the way through, when a lot of things were hitting their climax, that I felt the POV was shifting WAY too much. It was cutting into the middle of sub-plots (like Victoria finding out the truth, for lack of a better way to say it without spoilers) and instead of amping up the conflict and tension, I felt it diminished it.
The story ended at a good place. Wrapped things up, but at the same time, left it all open for an obvious sequel, which I'll definitely read when it's out.

The Perilous In Between- A Book Which Has Everything!

I got the review copy of this book from the author in exchange of an honest review. When I first received this book, I had absolutely no idea that I would love this book so much. I binge read this book for two days- that’s something I haven’t done in a while. I was really happy when I finished this book!
The story takes place in Chuzzlewit, a peculiar town established like the ones in the Victorian era, in the middle of.. well nowhere actually. Victoria, the leading pilot in the Aviatory’s Protection Program, is also a part of team assigned to protect their town from the Kreak- a life-threatening, mechanical creature, dwelling in the nearby ocean. She experiences flashbacks from a life in which she is a completely different person, but she doesn’t remember anything from those times. The story then takes an exciting turn when Graham (did I mention that I absolutely adore that guy? Oh, I didn’t. I’ll get there in a moment) unexpectedly arrives in the town, and turns Victoria’s life upside down. A lot of secrets about the people in Chuzzlewit is revealed with the entry of Graham, and he reveals a part of Victoria that makes her realize that getting rid of the Kreak isn’t the biggest obstacle in her life, but getting out of her so-called fairytale worthy life in Chuzzlewit is.
The book was different from anything I’ve ever read, and trust me, I was never interested in stories or movies with mechanical creatures (Yes, I’m talking about Godzilla), but damn, I was hooked on the book from the very beginning. I would be lying if I say that actually, I got really enthusiastic about the story when Graham entered. <3 I really loved Victoria, and how determined she was to save the people of her town from the Kreak, even though her uncle made sure she wouldn’t succeed. I have always been fascinated by women who fly planes, whether in story books or in real life, and Victoria was no different. Graham had the biggest heart, he was so eager to save the town even though he hadn’t lived there for a long time like the other people had. The book has the perfect balance of fantasy, mystery and romance. Lately, I have been really tired with books which go overboard with the romance, and The Perilous in Between was a big change in that factor. The world-building in this book is perfect, along with the character development as well. I fell in love with the people in this book and the friendships that many of them shared. I fought the urge to turn the pages and go the end of this book to find out what mystery lied within the beautiful town of Chuzzlewit.
The Perilous in Between was an enjoyable and an awesome read! I can’t wait for the next book to come out!!! (I’m dying here.) Please read this book guys. I hope you won’t be disappointed.
