Not something I'd recommend for everyone, but for me this was almost perfect science fiction. It's full of wild and mind bending ideas and it will keep your imagination running at top speed the entire time.

My only critique is that I didn't connect well with the characters, but then again they aren't really the focus of the book either. They are mostly there as a vehicle for the story of humanity and the Trisolarians and that's fine.

Awesome book, and I'm looking forward to the third chapter!

What a page turner! After a bit of a hiatus, I picked this back up the other day and this through it. Lots of big drama, action, and hard science I'll have to read up on to get any kind of understanding on. Translated books are always a bit of a trick, especially when conveying dialogue, idiom, or metaphor, but Martinsen did a good job.

I'm excited to start the third book asap!

Getting through this volume was tough. I didn't like the wall facers. The language was halted. The purposes and conclusions were strange in their eventual conclusions. Still, an interesting read.

5 star plot/premise and themes/emotional resonance, but 1 star treatment of women (infantalizing, fridging, them just barely existing) leads to 3 stars overall. if the women in this novel were treated the same as the men (not a high bar! there isn't particularly great characterization here, but there doesn't need to be for the novel to work), this would be an easy five stars, a deeply affecting novel.

Sequels are hard but this one delivers. The mystery aspect is not as big as in the first, but everything about it is so damn unique. I loved the theories and the concepts these books introduce or refer to. I find myself constantly googling and reading about it more. Very hard to review since anything I would say about the plot would spoil it. If you're fan of sci-fi, you have to read this trilogy.

Ducking one star for slow first 20%. Keep reading if you're struggling there.
