As Arthur Conan Doyle’s 2nd favourite Sherlock Case, I’ve got to say I wasn’t all that impressed after reading this. Of course, as a short story, this book lacked the length to properly expand upon a plot with appropriate twists and turns. The resulting case is rather lacklustre and simple. While I disliked nothing in particular about The Red-Headed League, there was nothing that automatically stood out as worthy of praise in my opinion.

Perhaps the one point of interest was how the book revealed the different sides to Holmes personality, fleshing out a character that wasn’t solely the emotionless detective. I appreciated Watson’s remarks on Holmes enthusiasm for music, as well as the duality of his persona when he described Sherlock’s swinging nature darting between extreme languor and devouring energy.

3 stars.

One of my favorite Holmes stories. Just so gleefully composed, and clever too!
