I am the sterile offspring of a race about which I know nothing, not even whether it has become extinct. Perhaps, somewhere, humanity is flourishing under the stars, unaware that a daughter of its blood is ending her days in silence.

Such a frustrating book! Not a single question is answered and we're left wondering from start to finish. And yet the bleakness of it all translates into sheer love for the characters, even the minor ones. These women were left abandoned to a world which was unable nor willing to care for them, and even they knew from the very start that they never stood a chance against it.

I don’t even know where to start with this review.

It was a little slow for me at the beginning, as I’m not used to this type of storytelling and usually don’t enjoy reading a first person POV. But about 30 pages and I was totally hooked and engrossed in the mystery that surrounds the story. It was so interesting and made keep hoping that there might be a different end. Despite the fact there’s heavy foreshadowing and plain text throughout the story that says it does not. Which I think really shows how good the story and characters were that I wanted the end to be different even though I knew it wasn’t going to.

“and now, racked with sobs, I was forced to acknowledge too late, much too late, that I too had loved, that I was capable of suffering, and that I was human after all.”
