Truth be told, the beginning of this book was really slow and I almost put it down, but then there was a plot twist and all that running around in circles made sense at once. I'm glad I finished it and I'm even curious enough to pick up the sequel.

Loved Jon McGoran's SPLICED--an "Animal Farm" for the 21st century, with a disturbing, and frighteningly timely, theme. This book will trigger important contemplation by and conversations among its readers, young and old--but it's also just a rollicking good read!

In this futuristic world, humans can have their DNA spliced with animal DNA. This has caused great controversy in the world because now legal debates are arising around what it means to be human and who is afforded the rights of humans. Jimi has never wanted to be spliced and stays away from those people, especially because she was attacked by a few of them when she was younger. Her best friend, Del, has a rocky home life and has chosen to get spliced without telling Jimi everything. She hopes to stop Del before he makes a lasting decision, but first she has to find him. Jimi goes deep into the spliced society and sees how they are truly treated and what legal ramifications have on their daily lives. With the help of Rex, a human/wolf hybrid, Jimi is determined to find Del.

More of this story was developed for social commentary, as opposed to character development and plot. The narrative felt forced instead of organic.

I kept reading hoping it would get better. This just was not for me. It sounded interesting, but I didn't like the characters. DNFed a little over halfway through.

Too many characters in a post-apocalyptic war setting with splicing tech that just doesn't make sense. I read books for pleasure, and this one is just not fun or interesting to read. Not for me.

I didn't realize it was YA when I picked it up, but I ended up enjoying it. Interesting world building and a good heroine in Jimi.

Being a chimera supporter is kind of like being a Trump supporter: constantly afraid of voicing your opinions for fear of violence and hatred from ignorant people.
Relatable 😂😭
