I'm not afraid to admit it -- I have almost no idea what is going on during the action-focussed sequences of this manga. And yet! The "trench run"sequences of this volume are so visually exhilarating that I don't even need to try to figure out who-knows-what is happening to enjoy this. Nihei chooses just the right angles and perspectives to make each panel zing with that special something that makes comics a medium like no other. How does this guy fit so much depth into one panel? How does he even conceive of such a kinetic mess? This shouldn't work - and it hasn't much in previous volumes, to be honest - but something is going on here and I don't know what it is. But I like it! I really do. I don't know who is who, or what is what, or when is which is why BUT.... well, I'm not even sure of what independent clause to use here but I'm going to keep reading to find out. Oh, and there's a talking bear!

One thing I noticed is that the timeline in the anime deviates from the timeline in the manga. The same stuff happens, more or less, but at different speeds.

Nah... this simply evokes too much Neon Genesis Evangelion and does not really seem to pull of something different. Ok, maybe later in the series, however the whole buildup so far just did not catch my interest. A general Mecha versus aliens scifi manga with some neat moments, but generally nothing so intersting and certainly not that original as Blame!
