Mary Poppins and the House Next Door by P.L. Travers

Mary Poppins books follow the same structure pretty much. Unruly children, Mary Poppins arrives unannounced in a strange way and every one tries to behave while she takes them on strange adventures. This story stays closer to home more as the empty house next door is under threat of a new resident. Miss Andrew makes a return with an addition of a small boy and a lot of the focus is around this. It is a sweet story with the children and their new neighbour as they try to play together without the strict Miss Andrew finding out.

This was one of the stories I like most but I think it was only for the end scene regarding the Man in the Moon. Admittedly it was lacking a little what the other books had, but it was still enjoyable. There were less adventures but you focused on the house which in itself was rather sweet at times.

I bet you thought there was only one Mary Poppins story, didn't you? I bet you didn't realise there was actually six. Me neither. Not until I picked up [b:Mary Poppins: The Complete Collection|8891934|Mary Poppins The Complete Collection (Mary Poppins, #1-6)|P.L. Travers|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1421894310s/8891934.jpg|42909770] that is. Most of us have seen the film/movie of the first book and I'm sure most of us loved it. So, when I saw this in the bookshop, and after getting over the surprise of there being six books, I bought it. [b: Mary Poppins and the House Next Door|1582795|Mary Poppins and the House Next Door (Mary Poppins, #6)|P.L. As you would expect, there are tricks aplenty from the magical nanny and for such a short story, a lot was packed in. It's a great little read if you have a spare hour and you're a big kid like me. I loved it.

A new neighbor has moved into the house next door on Cherry Tree Lane, and the Banks family are horrified. Only Mary Poppins has the magical wisdom to deal with the drama that threatens to engulf the whole street.

I love the whimsical writing and the funny magic! Mary Poppins is perfect as always, and the Banks children are silly and adorable. The plot has some interesting turns, and I love how all the neighbors on Cherry Tree Lane have their own little additions to the story.

Mary Poppins is just the right mixture of sweet and strict. She plays games with the children, but also lays down the law in the nursery. I love how she reacts to each twist in the plot with grace and elegance.

I’d give this a 3.5/5 star rating if that were an option. It was enjoyable in the end, but the companion of the House next door doesn’t age well in today’s world.

Not a fan, but I listened to the audio version which I'm positive contributed to this rating. The reader was incredibly annoying, loud, and some of the voices were racist. I also didn't love this story that much, kinda dull and rambling.

Read this with my kids (ages 4 yrs - 12 yrs). It was a cute story and gave more of a picture of Mary Poppins than the popular Disney movie. We all enjoyed it and will likely look for more of the series to read.
