Personally, I did not enjoy this book which surprised me. I found that I lost pace repeatedly throughout the plot and short stories. Some parts were just vivid and magical, whereas in others, I found it difficult to visualise and the scenes didn’t come alive, but became a cluster of words. I appreciate the concept of the world and Alice’s journey, however I would say the writing style was, simply, not for me.

Dit boek was heel bijzonder... Ik vraag me oprecht af welke drugs Lewis Carroll heeft genomen om dit boek te schrijven.

De vormgeving van het boek en de illustraties van Floor Rieder zijn fantastisch.
De vertaling van Sofia Engelsman leest natuurlijk en fijn.

Dan nu het verhaal zelf, dat is voor mij toch het belangrijkste en daar is mijn rating ook op gebaseerd. Dit is een uitgave met zowel 'Alice in Wonderland' als het tweede boek 'Alice in Spiegelland. Het is een omkeerboek. (heel tof).

Alice in Wonderland. ***
Ik zag dit boek ooit als film in de bioscoop (van Tim Burton) en dat was echt niks voor mij. Qua styling, make-up en kleding, special-effects fantastisch, maar het verhaal was mij net iets te absurdistisch. Ik vond het ook niet grappig, ik vond het gewoon raar. Niet echt mijn ding dus. In het boek vond ik dat veel minder. Ik vond het nu vaak wél grappig en ik hield van de taalgrapjes. Ik vond het einde

een beetje jammer, omdat de verhaallijnen nooit samenkomen tot een conclusie. Het eindigt gewoon met dat het een droom was. Op zich paste dat wel bij het verhaal, maar ik vind dat altijd een beetje makkelijk. Ach, het was ook wel lief.

Alice in Spiegelland. **
Ik denk dat het niet slim was om ze achter elkaar te lezen. Het werd net een beetje te veel absurdisme voor me en het leek minder samenhangend. Ook was er meer aandacht voor de versjes (die me in het eerste boek ook al niet heel veel interesseerden). Wel een leuk detail: je kunt dit boek naspelen op een schaakbord. Het las ook weer makkelijk weg.

I reread this for the first time in many years as I'm using it as one of the selections for my Victorian Sci-Fi and Fantasy Literature class. I enjoyed the first part, but Looking Glass has always been drier and less exciting to me---I don't enjoy it as much. My reading was enhanced this time around though since I've done some reading about Carroll and his relationship with the Liddells, the family of the real Alice. It was fun to see so many nods to them and things they did, people they knew, etc. sprinkled throughout the stories.
