i’m choosing not to rate this book because i have very complicated feelings about it. on one hand, it approaches a lot of issues that are pressing to youth today, such as lgbt+ issues, war, bullying, poverty, and familial strain. on the other hand, it does not handle every single one of those well, even on a watered down version that is appropriate for the age group this is targeting. it is also not a particularly good retelling of little women, the only thing in common is the family’s names and, to a certain extent, their relationships to one another. it isn’t bad by any means, and i could see it being an incredibly important book to many little women of today, but it has lofty goals and is unable to fully commit to them.

I love this book so much! :) In fact, I’ve read this before multiple times and I always want to read it again. It makes me want to read Little Women, the book it was based on! :) Overall, it’s a great book for anyone to read, especially girls/young women, kids who have been adopted or lost a parent, kids who have parents in the army, lgbtq+ kids/people, and anybody else! :)

This graphic novel retelling of Little Women is set in current day Brooklyn, NY, and is geared towards a middle grade/ young adult audience. There are so many plot lines happening at once in Little Women, and I think that this retelling managed to update them and fit them all in pretty well.

I really enjoyed all the characters, and they felt pretty true to the original characters while still being a bit unique. I was a bit worried about how some of the plot lines were going to be handled, but I was pleasantly surprised with how well it worked. In my dream Little Women modern retelling, I would have made some different choices, but overall I really enjoyed this one!

The author and illustrator made the cast of characters much more diverse than the original, which was definitely appreciated. I think that this book could have been stronger by addressing race more directly. Jo, the only white sister doesn’t address her privilege, and I think that would have been good.

Overall, I would definitely recommend picking this up!

This is everything! I loved the original Little Women, but this one is even better given it takes place in the 21st century. There are so many things that are talked about and challenged- yet, it has the same vibe as the original.
I put all the TWs down for graphic since it’s a graphic novel.
