I love this book so much! :) In fact, I’ve read this before multiple times and I always want to read it again. It makes me want to read Little Women, the book it was based on! :) Overall, it’s a great book for anyone to read, especially girls/young women, kids who have been adopted or lost a parent, kids who have parents in the army, lgbtq+ kids/people, and anybody else! :)

I absolutely  LOVED this retelling of Little Women. I love how this is a blended family where Jo's mom married Meg's father and then they had Beth and Amy. This is set in New York City which is a great place for it to be set. I love seeing how this book parallels with the original story. That instead of the father fighting in the Civil War he is over in the Middle East. And how they changed Jo and Meg's love lives and Beth's illness. Once I got started it was hard to put down.

This graphic novel retelling of Little Women is set in current day Brooklyn, NY, and is geared towards a middle grade/ young adult audience. There are so many plot lines happening at once in Little Women, and I think that this retelling managed to update them and fit them all in pretty well.

I really enjoyed all the characters, and they felt pretty true to the original characters while still being a bit unique. I was a bit worried about how some of the plot lines were going to be handled, but I was pleasantly surprised with how well it worked. In my dream Little Women modern retelling, I would have made some different choices, but overall I really enjoyed this one!

The author and illustrator made the cast of characters much more diverse than the original, which was definitely appreciated. I think that this book could have been stronger by addressing race more directly. Jo, the only white sister doesn’t address her privilege, and I think that would have been good.

Overall, I would definitely recommend picking this up!

I’ve been thinking about (re?)reading Little Women recently, then this crossed my radar and I was like “YES THIS.” This is a fun contemporary telling of the story. (
I was so tickled to see it NOT end in everyone getting together with some man - this is only one of the ways it feels much more of this time than the original </spoiler). It feels very YA but definitely enjoyable by others wanting to experience a retelling. I wasn’t sure if they were over explaining the family in terms of their race, but people probably do ask questions like that to folks in similar situations. I could see how this representation is helpful. The art is very simple but cartoony - the characters felt alive. The colors overall give a very warm feeling in the same way that the original story feels warm, if that makes sense. Definitely recommend to those new and not-new to the story.

This is everything! I loved the original Little Women, but this one is even better given it takes place in the 21st century. There are so many things that are talked about and challenged- yet, it has the same vibe as the original.
I put all the TWs down for graphic since it’s a graphic novel.
