This graphic novel retelling of Little Women is set in current day Brooklyn, NY, and is geared towards a middle grade/ young adult audience. There are so many plot lines happening at once in Little Women, and I think that this retelling managed to update them and fit them all in pretty well.
I really enjoyed all the characters, and they felt pretty true to the original characters while still being a bit unique. I was a bit worried about how some of the plot lines were going to be handled, but I was pleasantly surprised with how well it worked. In my dream Little Women modern retelling, I would have made some different choices, but overall I really enjoyed this one!
The author and illustrator made the cast of characters much more diverse than the original, which was definitely appreciated. I think that this book could have been stronger by addressing race more directly. Jo, the only white sister doesn’t address her privilege, and I think that would have been good.
Overall, I would definitely recommend picking this up!
