I never read written reviews but it has been an extremely long time since I’ve enjoyed reading a book this much and just had to for this one.

The Terror is filled with beautiful misery from nearly start to finish and I loved reading every second of it. I found it hard to put this book down! Just the sheer amount of horrible things these men go through just to survive in harsh arctic conditions while also being hunted by a creature on the ice is devastating and yet so thrilling to read. Additionally, this book is very well-written and provides such vivid, descriptive imagery that you can’t help but to physically recoil reading some of it.

I’m officially claiming this as one of, if not THE, best books I’ve ever read.

So, let me start off by saying that this book was decent. Incredibly well researched - I learned so much while reading this. The anxiety I felt when Sir John Franklin was trapped under the ice, the tension as Thomas Blanky flung himself to masts to escape the monster, the disbelief at Lieutenant John Irving's death - these were all very real emotions. And yet, Dan Simmons had to do what he appears to always do: oversexualizes women and girls. I've been in the process of finishing "The Rise of Endymion" and it's taking me years to read because of this same issue. Lady Silence is constantly belittled because of her "heathen" ways, yet she is sexualized at every page. Her body is always described in detail despite the reader's and character's uncertainty of her age. Her sexual encounters are always considered and she's constantly called a "wench." And yet! And yet the novel ends with her marrying Captain Francis Crozier, who despised her the entire novel! The ending felt rushed and ill-thought out.

First thing, this is a long one! I’ve had this on my shelf for years and when they made a tv adaptation I had to read it. I finally picked it up this winter and while I enjoyed it, this book was a commitment.

I honestly feel, this was a little too long but understand why it was and appreciate the historical accuracy. This is an excellent read for those looking for historical fiction but with a touch of horror and the supernatural.

A fictional twist on the arctic expedition of the Terror and Erebus!

worst book ever horribly racist, sexist, and homophobic and just painfully slow and boring on top of everything else. there was no fucking need to go into details of every woman's [CENSORED] and [CENSORED]. no one wants to read that shit

"But when I count the scars, there's a moment of truth, there wouldn't be [AMC's The Terror] if there hadn't been [The Terror by Dan Simmons]."

After watching the series on Netflix, I knew I had to read the book. I think this may have been the fastest I’ve ever read a 700+ book - I couldn’t put it down. The intensity of the impending doom with the added mystery of the thing on the ice made this novel gripping. Though a fair warning; Simmons is a stereotypical male author when it comes to writing about women.
