I picked up this book because I’m a huge fan of The Last of Us games. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, the book was good, but after consuming one of the greatest apocalyptic stories in modern media, this one fell short for me. It took me months to finish, because of its slow start. Once I got into the meat of the action, I finished it rather quickly, but those first 150 pages were dreadfully slow. The concept had great potential, but had too many similarities to The Last of Us and other apocalyptic stories that I had a hard time wanting to continue, because I could predict how it would end from very early on. If this book was my introduction to apocalyptic media, I would have liked it a lot more.

This book was super graphic (for me) A lot of zombie stuff and body matter. I call it the accidental zombie book I read. I would never have started it if I knew the subject matter, but it drew me in so thoroughly that I HAD to see how it ended. This is what I get for going in blind on books. Well written book tho.

Official rating is 3.5 stars.

This is definitely not your average zombie story. It is as moving, charming and empathetic as it is thrilling and gripping with a surprise ending I really did not see coming. Whether you want a heartfelt drama , suspensful intrigue, imaginative science, or just a smart story with decent characters, this has a bit for everyone

I read this at 14 and it holds up :) even though I don’t generally love zombie stuff the child narrator and way melanie processes and learns info and the relationships between characters truly makes it worth the read. Big fan :)
