i found the concept of this book very promising, but it turned out to be a series of shallow, sensationalized vignettes with little to say; characters blur, reduced to religious metaphors & pretty melancholy, only marginally less dehumanizing than every other depiction of 'hysterical' women, worse because these romanticized ramblings are tacked to photographs of real people who suffered in these institutions. repetitive, convoluted prose, more concerned with seeming intricate than conveying any meaning, obscured any story it hoped to tell.

I didn't dig the detached, poetic writing style using the pronouns "we" and "you". No coherent stories, just impressions and allusions.
