9/10. This book was deliciously steamy, romantic, and intriguing. There were a million twists and turns that I didn't see coming. I love that the main leads became true friends before becoming lovers. Also, the plot was so rich and interesting outside of the romance. I actually read this one before the first book in the series so I do plan on rereading this when I can read the books in order.

 Just as good as the first one. Well written, romantic, and smutty, with lots of history and witty banter. Somehow Charles balances sensitively handling traumas and gothic villains. Also some excellent cameos and mentions of previous characters--Luke even has a copy of *Jonathon*.

What I would have liked is an author's note. Charles has obviously done a mountain of research then hidden it in the story, it would have been nice to know a little more about the historically accurate parts.

Absolutely delightful second book in this series. I love the boisterous Rufus, and Luke's journey from Book 1 to this book 13 years later is wonderful and fascinating. And as always, the sex scenes are on fire.
