FIRST LINE REVIEW: "'Who are you?'" And the answer to that question is breath-taking and so very important. I've been wanting to read this one for some time now and it lived up to my expectations. Brave, articulate, profound, chilling, persuasive...on so many levels. Ayaan, thank you for speaking out for those who have been voiceless and persecuted for so long. Keep fighting!

Thoroughly engrossing and provocative on so many levels. This is a must-read for anyone with an interest in finding real solutions to the problems facing the world today. Prepare to engage all your critical-thinking skills as your preconceived beliefs *will* be challenged. This could be one of the most significant books of the 21st century.

On a more trivial note, if you are a fan of "nordic noir", the book provides a deep appreciation for the social issues and real history behind plot lines and themes you will see in everything from Borgen to Wallander to the Millennium series.

The "current" history was an eye-opener. That so much abuse through the eyes of the Muslim religion was all going on on the other side of the world while I was growing up. I admire her for her tenacity and courage in all that she went through but I could not embrace the writing style and, therefore, the characters... I got to over half-way through, we discussed it at book club and that was enough for me. Although, I do admire her for her strength and where she is today.

You don't have to fully agree with the author's political views or statements (I find she tends to generalise too much, without grounding in hard facts) to appreciate this story. As an autobiography it is a fascinating read. As a political statement it leaves something to be desired. It is definitely a journey I would recommend others to partake in.

Surprisingly positive memoir of the author's upbringing in and eventual escape from the physical and mental brutalities of islamic society. Her adaptability and courage are admirable as she still lives under serious death threats (in America!) to this day -- 23 years after she fled to Holland and then the USA.
