I read a few chapters and I cannot get it to this book. I thought it was a self-help book, but it is really just Tara’s ranting and life stories. I get her parents had a terrible relationship, but do we need to read every word they YELL AT EACH OTHER! I don’t understand why anyone would take advice from the author.
The best advice I got from this book is from one of it’s reviews.
“Buy yourself the F&@king lilies and give them to your Mother.”

This was part memoir and part self-help, and I wish the author would have chosen one instead of doing both mediocre. She had some okay tips, nothing revolutionary or that you couldn't find doing an hour of browsing online though. But, quite a few times I felt myself thinking that she was not acknowledging her privilege. Most people can't afford a $500 emergency, let alone to go on an international trip on a whim, just to "feel better". It seemed slightly out of touch with reality in that regard. I do appreciate the sentiment of "buy yourself the lilies" or the cup of coffee or whatever it is if it does have a positive impact. If you're buying one or even a few of those small things every day though it does add up, and while it may not be the difference between owning a home or not, $7/day for a year is about $2500, which could be spent on something else - such as that international trip.
I did agree with most of what she said about relationships - that how someone treats you is almost always a direct reflection of them and has nothing to do with you. Again though, this wasn't anything revolutionary and this type of information is readily available through other means.

This book is like talking to a friend. For anyone who is trying to unlearn bad habits, struggles with family relationships, or just wants to fucking be a better & happier human being — this book is for you. Schuster is yes, corny, at times but in a way that is endearing and overall good. She offers realistic advice and extremely relatable tales of her own struggles. Her honesty and encouragement made me laugh and cry more times than I can count. Please read this book.
