Somehow, this book pulls off having every problem a child could face, and not make it into a cliche. There is death. There is a bully. There is alienation. I could go on an on.

But, it works. This is the story of Finch, the girl who wishes she could be like her name-sake and fly away from all the hurt and pain. And in her hurt and pain, she reaches out to the girl next door, newly arrived from India, whose father doesn't like it in Canada, and wants to return to his home country.

SpoilerThe father tries to kidnap his kids to take them back, and Finch is partially responsible for their rescue.

And as I have said in the past, when a book makes me cry, it moves up in the star rating.

And even though she never turned into a bird, it was still a well crafted story.

Thanks to Netgalley and Kids Can press for making this book available for an honest review.

I received a copy of this book via a Goodreads giveaway. Many thanks to the author and publisher!

A good little book all about growing up and having to deal with some pretty heavy stuff well before your time. Finch was such a heartbreaking character I found myself wishing I could give her a hug.

Recommended.
