Outstanding. Haven't read a book that make me think so much in years. Everyone - I mean EVERYONE - needs to read this book. Have already promised my copy to a close friend, and am getting copies to send to several others.

A must-read for Americans willing to face our country's responsibility for creating the world we live in.

Imma be honest the first 4 and last 2 chapters were all I really cared about, and I skipped a lot of the Turkish history in between, but I learned a lot about American imperialism and preservation of innocence that we hold on to- even within American society/ our groups that look like us or belong to our “classes.” A fan of the James Baldwin quotes and intertwining of Mississippi!

The greatest tragedy for any human being is going through their entire lives believing the only perspective that matters is their own. - Doug Baldwin

I’m conflicted about this book. I wanted it to be a lot of things that it wasn’t, but got a lot out of it that I didn’t expect. There were good parts and bad, and parts I agreed with and disagreed with. I also found it a lot harder to get though than I’d hoped.

I’ve been reading this book on and off for years and finally finished it today. Not because it is a bad book but because it took me literal years to absorb it properly.
Quite possibly one of the best books I’ve ever read.
