I liked the story.  And it was very well written.  The characters were written with great care.  They had a slight but visible development, and it fit.  It was nice and at the same time interesting to see the beginning of the collaboration between Holmes and Dr.  Watson.

This book is a crafted masterpiece. It links together perfectly and the plot is amazing. Sherlock holmes is a talented man.

A fun first book for sure, I can see why the public would've been so obsessed in the late 1800s. I don't have a lot of thoughts on the story otherwise, but I did rather like that the second bit gives us the murderer's full story and motive, even if some less observant readers found it a bit confusing.

I love Sherlock Holmes and Watson. I think they are really interesting characters and compelling to read. The idiosyncratic nature of Holmes is balanced by the more level headed Watson and I find that brings a good partnership to the book. However, I would have liked to have got to know these characters in more depth. I was very confused by the transition to part 2 of the book, which made sense by the end but was very dry and boring initially. I love the history behind these books and the writing but wasn’t a major fan of the latter half of this book.

In order to read something out of my normal reading tastes, I take a dip into Sherlock Holmes.

Listening to this story/book was an adventure, a discovery and delightful on so many levels.

Stephen Fry as narrator does such an amazing job to bring this story to life and let you live it as you listen to it. This listen was immersive, and I liked that a lot.

I am also astonished how modern this story feels even after the many years it was first told. A timeless classic, I would have to agree.
