I was reading this around the same time I read the ST:TNG pilot novel. Nice thing about novelizations is that they provide additional insights on the characters. Over time, of the series, DS-9 became my favorite, especially later as the series progressed.

I enjoyed the episode a lot more than the novelization.

I'm reading the DS9 novelizations (mostly in time order) because I'm not ready to be done with the world of DS9 after finishing watching the show for the first time ever recently.

I found JM Dillard's writing engaging, and for a novelization of an episode, which can be harder to make engaging since the events have largely already been viewed on screen, that is high praise.

One thing I particularly enjoy about the earlier Star Trek books is the length. They seem to be shorter than the newer ones, or at least they read shorter. Technically, this one's nearly 300 pages, but the font is so large I got through it in less than two hours. There's not a lot of waffle here, is what I'm saying, and that makes this particular novelisation a good, fast-paced read. Pilot episodes always have a lot to do, of course, introducing all the different characters, and like the television episode, Emissary does it adequately, although the lion's share of attention goes to Sisko, which is fair enough. The rest of the characters get more basic sketches, but that's something that will round itself out in later novels, I expect.

Basically it's just a short, fun read. It reminded me of bits of the episode that I'd forgotten - it's been a while since I last rewatched the series - and it's making me want to go back and watch it again.

Even better than the pilot. It broadens the emotions and relationships without taking them in directions unfaithful to the aired version.

I was surprised to find myself liking the novelization of a pilot episode as much as I did. I remember the DS9 premiere as fairly uneven (though probably still the strongest Trek premiere). The moments between Picard and Sisko are beautifully illustrated here.

3.5 stars - Lovely narration by Nana Visitor but, other than a few additional details, there was very little added to the original pilot. Great for hardcore Niners.

Of all the recent novelisations I've read recently this one is one of the best. Beyond being a faithful adaptation of the pilot of Deep Space Nine, it actually bothers to give good descriptions and character insights / motivations. My one suggestion is to start with chapter 2. Although the pilot does actually start 3 years in the past with the Borg attack, the first chapter stalls the rest of the story. There is enough referral to the backstory that the first chapter really isn't needed in the book. I dare you future readers to start the book with chapter 2.
