I really enjoyed it. However, I would only recommend it if you like more cerebral reads.

I think I read this too fast, by which I mean, I am sad the reading of this book is finished. Banville is in a category and class all of his own.

This novel had a lot of interesting ideas but they didn't always connect for me and occasionally just came off as pretentious.

One of the finest first pages ever written (with many more dazzling pages that follow). Incredibly well-wrought, though not always an easy read as a result. Keeps your brain working, but offers many delightful insights. I also liked the interplay of infinities and boundaries throughout. Lots to discover here.

This story of the Greek god Hermes narrating the events surrounding a modern patriarch's deathbed is unbearably pretentious and unforgivably cruel to its characters. Add to that an utterly inconsequential plot and I just couldn't wait to be through with it.

I didn't finish it. Too clever by half yet not interesting. Indulgent style.

So. Boring. Could not fathom spending 200+ more pages with these characters.

This was a very strange book. It seduced me in the beginning with it's talk of Greek Gods and it's elegant prose, but as it went on it became more boring, more confusing, and less enjoyable. I was confused with who was talking as the POV switches weren't apparent, until it was too late. In reality, nothing of great importance happens in 273 pages. I wouldn't recommend this book.
