I read Evil Eye last month and gave it 5 stars, and it's near impossible for me to give things 5 stars, so I figured this woman must be amazing I gotta read what else she has. Only one other book?! How heartbreaking! I need more! Etaf Rum the woman that you are!!!

I do feel that if I had read this book first and Evil Eye second, I still would've given Evil Eye 5 stars. These books were written for the culture. Not my culture, but the importance of them, the weight of them, were not just to represent Palestinians and Arabs, but to show other Arabs "this is who we are, we have stories to tell, and we have to be honest with ourselves" and I love that SO much. Etaf Rum you will always be famous!!!

I haven't been inclined to read literary fiction for the past few years but with current events in Palestine, I felt compelled to read this book. It's also worth noting that I live in the neighborhood in which this book takes place.

All that being said, this is the best, most moving and gripping book I've read in years. Although the story was mercilessly dark and hard to read at times, I could not put it down. I feel a new sense of appreciation for my own culture where I am a woman who's free to make my own choices; and I feel enlightened to how women in other cultures are treated and seen (or not).

After the big reveal around the 2/3 mark I wasn't sure how the rest of the story would play out but that final chapter was heart-wrenching.

Every woman should read this book regardless of their race, cultural background or home.

A compelling and powerful inter generational family saga about the successive cycles of trauma experienced by the women of a Palestinian family living in Brooklyn. I read this book compulsively finding myself caught in the family's narrative and understanding how disempowerment and shame create a cycle of intergenerational trauma.

Depsite the dark and difficult parts of this story, the narrative of women struggling to find their voice and learn their worth is so poignant. A 5-star read for sure.

Honestly this book was incredible. A lot of reviewers say it was repetitive, but bear in mind it is being told from three different perspectives so some of it is bound to repeat. It is a beautiful story of the strength of women and will definitely stick with me for a while.
the plot twist at the end?? So many different theories I may or may not have googled. The plot twist really is what knocked it down from 5 stars for me. I needed one more chapter…. Or even paragraph really… to give an explanation of what happens after the subway doors open.
all in all, it was a great read and I highly recommend it - just make sure you’re in the headspace for something pretty dark.

This was a rough one, and I was surprised that it was on Jenna Bush Hager's reading list, but I'm probably judging her unfairly based on her father. I thought the book unfolded very well, and I will definitely read this author again. Lots of digging fingernails into legs, though. Maybe that was on purpose to connect the generations of women?
