What an incredibly emotional story. How much families suffer due to generational and cultural trauma. I felt for every single character in this book.

Isra - To be married off and plucked from your homeland, devastating. To have to meet unrealistic expectations from your new family, just wrecked me. The fact that she knew that she had to do something so her daughters wouldn’t suffer the same fate 😭

Fareeda - 😒 I initially did not like this lady, as the matriarch of the family she was too demanding of everyone. How she berated Isra, Sara, and later Deya, Isra’s daughter… horrifying. She was just projecting tho, and as the story unravels we learn why and that in itself is beyond sad

Deya - Reaching the age where she could be “married off” she fought back, she learned the truth about her parents deaths, what happened to her aunt Sarah and the power to change her life by fighting back against the expectations her family had for her.

I had little to no idea what to expect going into this (it was on my every growing list of recs from TikTok and I picked it up purely on a whim), and boy oh boy did  it make me confront my privilege in a few big way. The recent craze of the Barbie movie has centered a lot of white feminist thinking in my brain (it's still an excellent movie that makes a lot of good points), and I'm very glad I read this book soon after to remind myself that domestic violence and limitation of girls' education are still real issues that cultures are permeated with. The characters in this book feel both rich and raw with emotion, and the fierce hope they manage to hold onto in unimaginable circumstances is incredible. Additionally, the author manages to capture the real feelings of hesitation of guilt they feel at acting outside their roles as obedient wives and mothers with such empathy, and you get this complete picture of women at odds with themselves, trapped in a culture that actively harms them, still seeking love and care in whatever ways they can find it.  It's beautifully done, and I'm so glad I read it.

I think it was really good but I also maybe wouldn’t recommend it to everyone because of the strong themes. I do wonder how much is based off of the author’s life because it was interesting reading her end thoughts about the book and it seems like it is really semi autobiographical. I think more of it is about her life then I initially thought. It was interesting to hear how she wrote this as a story fiction because she was afraid of what her family might think but yet she was also trying to break the silence and balance that.

Dive into this book headfirst and I promise you, you'll gain a new perspective after reading this book. Not only does it portray a heartbreaking scene of the generational trauma thrust upon women, the writing was fluid and the characters were strong in presence.

10/10 recommend if you want to educate yourself on the horrors women face.
