The opening of the book reads a bit like online journalism, tech journalism. I hoped it would mature in character after opening, and it did. Like the old world wine she describes, it breathes wine and it settles into an interesting memoir of the author's self-imposed challenge.
For me, as a sensory explorer, I found the process fascinating, but I will say the wine details were more than I needed to read. If there were not oenophiles in the world, the book could easily be 1/3 shorter. A Reader's Digest version? I could have skimmed it I suppose, but it's not that long... (And honestly, I'm more of a fiction reader.)
What I learned from this book? Ask your Sommelier for a recommendation, given your price point, taste and pairing needs. Don't just order what you recognize off the wine list. Don't rely on tasting notes to mean something much more than the general profile and the romance of the evening. Give up on trying to impress anybody with your wine knowledge. Enjoy the wine.
